Club de Golf Lomas-Bosque wins 5th Madrid-Costa del Sol Masters Golf Tour

Club de Golf Lomas-Bosque wins 5th Madrid-Costa del Sol Masters Golf TourClub de Golf Lomas-Bosque has won the 5th Madrid-Costa del Sol Masters Golf Tour, attracting over 1,500 golfers. Organised and sponsored by the Costa del Sol Tourist Board, the tournament was held last weekend at the Valle Romano Golf & Resort in Estepona. The award ceremony took place at the Kempinski Hotel Bahía.

The Madrid-Costa del Sol Masters Golf Tour, now in its fifth edition, was created to attract Madrid golfers to the Costa del Sol by publicising our region’s potential for golf tourism, especially after the launch of the Madrid-Málaga rail corridor served by AVE-Renfe high-speed trains, which make it possible to reach the Costa del Sol in a little more than two hours. The initiative has succeeded in the accomplishment of this goal, raising the number of golf players from Madrid coming to the Costa del Sol according to local golf industry sources.

Data indicate that demand for golf courses runs high in the Madrid market, given the high player/golf course ratio in the area (3,500). This makes this market even more attractive.

The Madrid-Costa del Sol Masters Golf Tour has become a major event on the calendar of the Madrid golf industry, and we are planning to continue organising it for many years.

The final round went to Club de Golf Lomas-Bosque, whose team competed against those representing six other golf courses: Real Sociedad Hipíca Española Club de Campo, Golf La Moraleja, Olivar de la Hinojosa, Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, Club de Golf Retamares, and Club Jarama R.A.C.E. The teams that made it to the finals were made up by Andrés Mariano López, Visitación Gayo Sierra, Fernando García Domínguez, and Ángel Pérez Alonso.

Parallel to the official competition, there was a tournament for guests, journalists, and golf-playing celebrities, with the participation of our affiliates, who cooperated with the organisation of the tournament all throughout the year. The winner was Ángel Rodríguez, followed by Luis Corralo and Verónica Mengod.

After the game, there was a dinner hosted by the Costa del Sol Tourist Board and attended by the seven teams that made it to the finals and the managers of the golf courses they represented, a representative of the Andalusian Royal Golf Federation and President of the Committee of Commercial Golf Courses, the President of the Madrid Golf Federation, representatives of AVE-Renfe, executives from firms like Cheque Gourmet, Beklsen, and Ibericar Benet, reporters from Radio Marca, El Periodigolf, Onda Cero, motorgolfyviajes.com, RTVE, golfhoyoahoyo, and other media, journalists Ángel Rodríguez, Constantino Mediavilla, Elena Jiménez, Francisco Montesdeoca, and Guillermo Salmeron, the comedian Sinacio, the bullfighter Oscar Higares, Verónica Mengod, and many others.

The game unfolded in great weather, which the participants really enjoyed. They also enjoyed the parallel activities, which included a gazebo at hole 9 where they could sample Málaga Virgen sweet wine and ham.

The qualifying rounds of the 5th Madrid-Costa del Sol Masters Golf Tour were held at all the above-mentioned golf clubs in Madrid from April to October. The 28 golfers who played the interclub finals at the Valle Romano Golf & Resort in Estepona emerged from them (four per golf course/round).

In addition to the tournament, the Tourist Board planned a full weekend programme of activities for the Madrid delegation, which comprised 140 people, including players, companions, guests, and journalists. On Friday afternoon, they all got together at Atocha station in Madrid. When they arrived at María Zambrano station in Málaga, there was a photo session to document the event.

The delegation stayed at Kempinski Hotel Bahía. On the day of their arrival, they had dinner at Taberna del Alabardero in San Pedro de Alcántara. The golf game took place on Saturday under the Best-Ball Stableford scoring system. It was followed by lunch at the Club House. The parallel tournament drew 90 players, who also enjoyed their game in the sun.

There were special activities for those members of the delegation who were not playing golf. In an attempt to introduce Málaga’s hinterland as a complementary off-peak travel product, we organised a trip to Mijas, which finished with lunch at the Club House in La Cala Resort, where our guests tried all kinds of regional dishes. Organised by the staff at La Cala, there was a golf tournament for beginners; the winner got a weekend stay at La Cala Hotel.

On Saturday evening, the award ceremony and a cocktail reception took place at the Kempinski Hotel Bahía, drawing over 200 guests. The Tourist Board Managing Director, Arturo Bernal, thanked everyone for being there and the sponsors, media, and Tourist Board affiliates for “having supported this initiative since its beginning.” Then we gave the trophies to the winning team and their captain.

On Sunday, the group visited Málaga and the Tourist Board’s headquarters, going on a city tour that ended at Bodega El Pimpi, where they sampled Málaga’s most traditional dishes.
